Iran bitumen

,Performance grade bitumen (PG) is bitumen that is graded based on performance at different temperatures. LTPP has developed a specific algorithm for calculating asphalt temperature based on the respective air temperature. With this algorithm, the maximum and minimum temperature of asphalt is calculated and the best bitumen that works at this temperature is selected.

 

Functional Classification Bitumens (PG)

In this method, bitumen is classified based on performance characteristics in different environmental conditions. The profile is defined to limit the potential for permanent bitumen change and failure due to fatigue and cracking at low temperatures.

 

Types of bitumen in terms of electric charge:

Decreased thermal sensitivity

Increase elasticity

Increasing the service range in terms of temperature

Increased stress resistance

Increase user life

Reduce road damage

 

Functional classification for bitumen selection has been developed by SHRP. In this classification, which is based on recognizing the behavior of bitumen and its functional characteristics, with the characteristics of resistance to deformation, resistance to cracking due to cold, resistance to cracking due to fatigue, prediction of how hard bitumen in Asphalt plant and when preparing the asphalt mixture, how the bitumen hardens over time and with the tests specified in the specifications, and the appropriate bitumen according to the temperature of the project site, traffic, loading speed and Geographical location is selected.

 

Each type of bitumen is characterized by two positive and negative numbers, the positive number is related to the average of seven consecutive days with the highest pavement temperature and the negative number is the minimum pavement temperature in degrees Celsius.

Bitumen refinery processes

 

In an oil refinery, processed crude oil is divided into different cuts based on their boiling range. In atmospheric distillation, which is the first stage of this continuous process, crude oil is heated to 300 to 350 degrees Celsius and the more volatile components are heated. Gasoline and kerosene are distilled. This material leaves a residue called the atmospheric residue, which is mostly discharged under a vacuum.

The actual residual processing temperature is 350 to 390 ° C, but due to the vacuum applied, the most effective distillation cut-off point is 500 to 560 ° C. This vacuum distillation process produces more volatiles known as vacuum distillates, leaving a very non-greasy residue of high viscosity called a vacuum residue.

Depending on the origin of the crude oil, vacuum residues are used directly as bitumen without further processing. However, for some crude oils or to create special specifications, additional processing may be required, such as blowing gentle air from the residue. The air blowing process requires careful selection and control of process temperature, air velocity and residence time to ensure a stable product. Bitumens are sometimes produced by mixing vacuum residues with asphaltene from lubricating oils. For example, when producing lubricating oils in the same refinery, propane (PPA) sedimentary asphalt is commonly used in the manufacture of bitumen.

The choice of crude oil is an important aspect of bitumen production that requires expertise and experience to obtain a satisfactory product - it can not be used to produce all crude oil.

Bitumen A small number of approximately 1,500 crude oils available are suitable for the production of quality bitumen. In Australia, very few crude oils are able to produce bitumen by current Australian standards.

Cut bitumens are produced by diluting the paving grade bitumen with cutting or flux. Bitumen emulsions are made by dispersing asphalt grade bitumen in water with the help of emulsifier in a colloidal mill.

For industrial bitumen, it is necessary to blow hard air to produce a material that softens at temperatures above the level of the asphalt level with equivalent penetration. Therefore, this product is known as "air bitumen" or "oxidized". Typically, blower gas raw materials have a lower initial boiling point than paved surface asphalts. This process, along with intense blowing, imparts certain physical properties to industrial bitumen.

The production of high quality bitumen relies on a combination of modern refinery skills, experience and technology. These items are widely used to ensure the adequacy of feed sources and to monitor and control all stages of the process.

Making bitumen emulsions

Today, two methods for preparing bitumen emulsions are common in road construction, which are:

1- Continuous method

2- Modular method

The main difference between these two methods is that in the preparation of bitumen emulsion by continuous method, bitumen phase and aqueous phase are instantly prepared and injected into the production system. If in the modular method, the aqueous phase is prepared separately in two modules or the bitumen phase is mixed instantly in a colloidal mill. In the bitumen emulsion production process, the emulsion solution and bitumen are passed through the mill to make the emulsion. The pumps introduce the emulsion solution of bitumen into the mill. Emulsion solution consists of water, emulsion, acid and, if necessary, stabilizer, which are mixed carefully and in appropriate proportions to obtain a uniform solution with the desired degree of acidity. The bitumen used can be pure bitumen or bitumen mixed with an oil solvent such as kerosene or diesel or vegetable oils. The emulsion is removed from the hot mill. Therefore, before transferring to the storage tank, it must be entered into heat exchangers to reach the appropriate temperature and then enter the storage tank.

 

The emulsion temperature during manufacture should never exceed 100 ° C and should be kept between 85 and 95 ° C. In order to avoid local temperature rise, the temperature difference between the bitumen and the emulsion solution should be as small as possible. The bitumen must be hot enough to be pumped. For emulsions with 60% bitumen, the set temperature of the two phases should be considered around 195 ° C and the temperature of the emulsion at the outlet of the mill should be around 90 ° C. Before producing bitumen emulsion, a suitable formula should be selected to make it according to the application and related properties and relevant standards.

The difference between the old refining system and the new system

 

In the new refining process, in order to reduce the production cost and increase the refining speed and reduce the cost price of the final product, in the refining process, instead of using traditional bach wise methods, the continuos method is used.

 

In this process, due to the use of composite towers, all feeds available in the market such as fuel oil, vacuum baton, slabs and other feeds can be used. These production units have the ability to produce any type of bitumen and are dedicated to the production and consumption of feed. And they are not special bitumen.

 

In the new refining process, due to the design and installation of explosion-proof valves, the risk of explosion and fire will be eliminated.

 

In the old process, the bitumen firing tower needed to absorb a lot of energy to refine and raise its temperature, which was produced by spraying fuel in the central pipe of the tower with high heat and for a long time.

 This method first consumes a lot of fuel and causes a large amount of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other environmental pollutants. In this method, the cost of energy consumption for production is very high, but in the new refining process to produce the heat required by the tower, this energy is not needed and it uses the heat of chemical reactions to raise the temperature and refine the bitumen.

 In the units that work in the old way, basically no bitumen is produced in the cooking tower, but only the initial feed condensation operation is done. Unfortunately, the product made from this incorrect method of bitumen production is exposed to weak UV rays of the sun. is .

 

In the old refining process, vapors and aromatic compounds from the charcoal production process due to direct heat in the tanks and its reaction with oxygen cause the production of sulfur gas and are spread in the ambient air. But in the design of the new process, this defect has been eliminated.

 

In previous processes, the aeration system of the tower, due to the lack of calculation of air pressure, did not give any data to the person in charge of bitumen firing and the person in charge is unaware of the situation inside the tower, except for the temperature inside.
