Emulsion bitumen
The classification for bitumen emulsions is based on the following criteria:
1- Ionic structure (electrical charge sign of a particle)
2- Stability in contact with fast-breaking (unstable), medium-breaking (semi-stable), late-breaking (stable and very stable) stone materials
Why emulsion?
Bitumen is solid or semi-solid at ambient temperature, which does not have the necessary performance, but can be used in the following three ways, which are:
Heating bitumen
Mixing bitumen with petroleum solvents (soluble bitumen)
Mixing bitumen with water as a bitumen emulsion
The first method is usually used for high volume jobs. The second method is expensive today because it causes the loss of petroleum solvents, environmental pollution and the release of hydrocarbons, especially in urban areas, and carries the risk of fire. In addition, the work in this case should be done in a favorable season with dry and non-wet stone materials.
Bitumen emulsions should have special properties depending on the use, for example, the characteristics of bitumen emulsion used to create an adhesive layer between two layers of asphalt are different from the bitumen emulsion used to prepare cold asphalt mixture.
